ER Docs: Never Ignore These Injuries

Posted on December 4, 2025

You slip, trip, or get a small bite -- and brush it off. It doesn’t seem serious at first. But what looks like a minor injury can quickly turn into something far more dangerous. According to emergency room physicians, here are some of the most commonly underestimated injuries that can turn into bigger problems.

1. Animal Scratches and Bites

Even a small nip or scratch can lead to a major infection. Dogs and cats carry bacteria in their mouths, and cat claws can drive germs deep beneath the skin. Infections can escalate rapidly, causing complications such as sepsis or organ failure. Clean the wound carefully, watch for redness or swelling, and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen -- or immediately if the bite came from a wild animal due to rabies risk.

2. Puncture Wounds

A nail, knife, or sharp object may cause only a tiny opening, but puncture wounds often penetrate deep into tissue, carrying bacteria inside. They can also damage nerves or cause tetanus, especially if your vaccination isn’t current. Don’t ignore them; get medical advice, particularly if the object was dirty or rusted.

3. Head Injuries

Whether from a fall, bump, or car accident, head injuries can develop symptoms over hours or even days. Headaches, nausea, dizziness, or confusion shouldn’t be ignored. For older adults or those on blood thinners, even a seemingly minor fall can be life-threatening. If there’s any loss of consciousness or vomiting, go to the ER immediately.

4. “Minor” Car Accident Injuries

The adrenaline rush after a collision can mask pain, leading people to underestimate their injuries. Whiplash, concussions, and internal bruising often appear later. It’s wise to get checked out early -- not just for your health, but also to protect your legal rights if another driver was at fault.

5. Cuts or Scrapes That Don’t Heal

Most minor wounds start healing within a few days. If a cut isn’t closing, shows increasing redness or swelling, or develops an odor, it could signal infection or a deeper problem. Early treatment can prevent serious complications.

6. Eye Scratches or Foreign Objects

Even a small scratch on the cornea -- from makeup brushes, branches, or debris -- can lead to infection or scarring. If pain, redness, or vision changes persist, see an eye doctor right away. A lodged particle, especially metal, can permanently damage your vision if left untreated.

7. Blistering Burns

Kitchen, chemical, or electrical burns that blister (second-degree burns) often require medical care. They can scar and become infected. Burns larger than a few inches or those showing signs of infection should always be evaluated by a professional.

8. Injuries with Numbness

Tingling or loss of sensation can indicate nerve damage, poor circulation, or other serious issues. It’s a warning sign that shouldn’t be ignored.

9. Sprains and Dislocations

While some orthopedic injuries heal with rest, persistent swelling, deformity, or inability to bear weight can mean a fracture or vascular damage. Dislocations that are “popped” back into place still require medical evaluation.

Accidents happen -- but sometimes, they happen because someone failed to take reasonable care. A wet floor, an unrestrained dog, a neglected walkway, or poor property maintenance can all lead to preventable injuries.
