How Physiotherapy During Labor Reduces Birth Injury
Could a physiotherapist in the delivery room make childbirth safer for moms and babies? According to new research presented at the 2025 American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology Annual Clinical & Scientific Meeting, the answer may be yes.
Recent legislation now requires maternity hospitals to include physiotherapists (also known as physical therapists) as part of their care teams. This is a move that reflects their growing role in helping mothers manage pain and improve birth outcomes. Through specialized techniques such as kinesiotherapy, thermotherapy, and electrotherapy, physiotherapists can support women through labor, easing discomfort and promoting smoother deliveries.
The findings are compelling. Across 12 studies involving 984 pregnant women, those who received physiotherapy during labor had higher rates of vaginal delivery and fewer cesarean sections than those who received standard care. Labor was also shorter, and mothers reported less pain and anxiety. On average, pain scores dropped by more than one point on the Visual Analog Scale, and maternal anxiety was reduced by nearly eight points.
In addition to reducing the likelihood of C-sections, physiotherapy was associated with fewer perineal lacerations, less need for medication-based pain relief, and overall better maternal well-being.
These results underscore the importance of comprehensive, attentive care during childbirth. When labor is properly managed, the risks of complications and potential birth injuries -- such as oxygen deprivation or trauma from difficult deliveries -- can decrease significantly.
Unfortunately, not every family receives the care they deserve. Medical professionals have a duty to provide safe, evidence-based labor and delivery practices. When that duty is breached, and a baby or mother is harmed as a result, families may have legal options.
