Is Spinal Cord Stimulation Safe? Does it Work?

Posted on October 10, 2025

A spinal cord injury can change everything in an instant. One moment, you are independent and active. The next, you may need help with even the most basic functions of daily life. That’s why researchers around the world are working to find new ways to restore independence and improve quality of life for people with these devastating injuries.

One option that has gained attention in recent years is epidural spinal cord stimulation (eSCS). This therapy uses a surgically implanted device to send electrical signals directly to the spinal cord. The hope is that these signals can help patients regain movement, improve posture, and restore some lost body functions.

The Research

A recent study looked at three men who had complete spinal cord injuries in the middle of their backs. Each had been living with injury for at least two years. With each patient, doctors implanted a stimulator with 32 tiny contacts on the lower spinal cord and developed a personalized program. Over the course of a year, researchers found:

However, the therapy did not restore voluntary movement.

The Safety

While promising, spinal cord stimulation isn’t without risk. The procedure involves surgery, which always carries potential complications. Reported risks include:

These devices are also used for chronic back pain, with mixed results. A review of 13 clinical trials found little to no long-term benefit for pain relief. Even more concerning, 79% of reported adverse events were classified as severe, with many patients needing follow-up surgery. Some regulators, including authorities in Australia, have even removed certain devices from the market.

The Future

If you or a loved one has suffered a spinal cord injury, you may be following these medical developments closely. It’s natural to hope for new therapies that could restore independence or improve quality of life. At the same time, it’s important to weigh both the potential benefits and the risks.

No matter what treatment path you pursue, one thing is certain: spinal cord injuries are among the most expensive and life-altering injuries a person can face. From hospital stays and rehabilitation to experimental treatments like eSCS, the costs can be overwhelming. Sometimes, the difference between a life of hardship and one of relative comfort is having the financial means to get the support and resources you need.
