Coast Guard Recreational Boating Statistics Report

Recreational boating is a favorite pastime for many, but it comes with risks. Every year, the U.S. Coast Guard tracks accidents, injuries, and fatalities on the water, and the newest Recreational Boating Statistics Report shows both progress and cause for concern.
On the positive side, boating fatalities dropped by 1.4%, from 564 to 556—the lowest number in more than 50 years. The fatality rate is now 4.8 deaths per 100,000 registered vessels, slightly improved from 4.9 the year before. That’s a long way from 1971, when Congress enacted the Safe Boating Act and the fatality rate stood at 20.6 per 100,000 boaters.
But despite this encouraging trend, overall incidents increased by 1.1%, rising to 3,887 in 2024. Nonfatal injuries also went up, climbing 2.1% to 2,170.
What’s Behind the Fatalities?
The report sheds light on key factors that continue to contribute to boating deaths:
- Lack of safety training – Roughly 70% of fatalities occurred on boats operated by individuals without boating safety instruction.
- Boat types involved – Open motorboats, personal watercraft, and cabin motorboats were most commonly involved. Standup paddleboard fatalities are also on the rise.
- Life jackets save lives – Three-quarters of victims drowned, and 87% of them were not wearing a life jacket.
- Alcohol use – Alcohol was the leading factor in fatal boating accidents, responsible for 20% of deaths (92 fatalities).
Lessons for Boaters
While today’s waters are safer than they were decades ago, the report underscores the importance of continued vigilance. Boaters can reduce risks by:
- Taking a certified boating safety course
- Wearing a life jacket at all times
- Avoiding alcohol when operating a boat
- Using engine cutoff switches where available
