Coast Guard Recreational Boating Statistics Report

Recreational boating is a favorite pastime for many, but it comes with risks. Every year, the U.S. Coast Guard tracks accidents, injuries, and fatalities on the water, and the newest Recreational Boating Statistics Report shows both progress and cause for concern.

On the positive side, boating fatalities dropped by 1.4%, from 564 to 556—the lowest number in more than 50 years. The fatality rate is now 4.8 deaths per 100,000 registered vessels, slightly improved from 4.9 the year before. That’s a long way from 1971, when Congress enacted the Safe Boating Act and the fatality rate stood at 20.6 per 100,000 boaters.

But despite this encouraging trend, overall incidents increased by 1.1%, rising to 3,887 in 2024. Nonfatal injuries also went up, climbing 2.1% to 2,170.
