How Safe Were Airlines Last Year?

Posted on January 13, 2020

Aviation Safety Network statistics are cited in the Forbes article.

A report on 2019 aviation accidents and deaths has just been released by Forbes magazine. The number of fatal accidents increased by 30 percent from the previous five-year average, and the 2019 death toll was nearly 500 percent higher than that of 2017.

The major story of the year was the Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX crash in March. With 156 casualties, this accident accounted for more than half of the 287 fatalities for 2019. In another accident cited in the article, an Iranian Boeing 707 crashed when pilots confused one airport runway with another – a repeat of a similar error that occurred just weeks prior. The first time, the plane narrowly missed crashing. The second time, it killed 15 people.
